The majority of the texts in this volume are papers that were submitted at the Workshop A Common European Identity in a Multi-Cultured Continent organized by the Centre for Comparative European Culture and Art at Bogazici University, in April 1992, under the sponsorship of the Council of Europe, Bogazici University and the Institute of social Sciences of Istanbul University. The theme of the Project was 'the transformation of images of identity by nations, groups and individuals of themselves and of one another, as well as of the cultural and physical environment, with a view to defining and determing the existence of a common European identity in a multi-cultured context, over and above the complexities of ethnic, religious and and regional diversity'.
